A message from the SSCA President

On Tuesday, March 30th, the president of Springdale School Community Association met with Mr. Bob Dunton, Superintendent of Corbett School District and other administrators.  At that time, Mr. Dunton explained he was informed by Multnomah County’s Compliance Officer that the use of the Springdale School is illegal.  Mr. Dunton said he was told to either present a plan to bring Springdale School up to code or fines would be levied if the facility remains in use.  To meet the current county code improvements it will be very expensive and difficult given the county’s short time frame.

The task of finding out how to make the Springdale School compliant has been a project of  SSCA.

From: Corbett School District #39 Office
Superintendent, Bob Dunton

Subject: School Board Director's vote on a resolution
to accept an "earnest money" offer for surplus properties.

On Wednesday, February 18, 2009 the Board voted unanimously to accept the offer of $312,000 by the Springdale School Community Association for the Springdale School property that the District owns. Representatives Karen Schaaf, Bev Law and President Gary Law from SSCA's board were in attendance. SSCA has until May 2011 to make closing on the real estate offer.

Mr. Dunton says that for now the management of the facility which has several tenants will continue as in the past. Near the time of closing there will be an agreed upon transition period before the future owners, SSCA, will manage the whole operation. Currently SSCA and the District have a Memorandum of Understanding on how the facility is managed and that MOU will remain in effect.

The sale has been under discussion for about one year in which time all required factors for a public school district property sale were addressed. The Springdale property is very unique and it worked out that the only offer on the property was from the community itself. SSCA was formed as a non-profit in 2006 by members of the community and by some of the tenants. The facility is no longer considered a School in the eyes of Multnomah County Land Use authorities. SSCA will proceed with the land use application in order to make the facility compliant with its present use which is "community Services" and "conditional uses/ business uses".
